Notpla
Notpla is redefining the packaging industry by eliminating single-use plastic. Most food packaging have a coating of plastic which break-up into microplastics and regardless end up harming the environment. While certain bioplastics come from plants they need specific composters to decompose and in general landfill still end up as microplastics. Notpla makes food packaging containers, spoons, olive oil pipettes, edible water pockets called Ooho, and their innovation continues to explore different products. See more on: https://notpla.shop
How is Notpla different?
Notpla uses seaweed to make food packaging sustainable and environmentally friendly. According to their LCA study, their food packaging boxes have 70% lower carbon footprint than plastic alternatives, their paper products use one tonne of seaweed to save four tonnes of trees for paper alternatives, and their ice cream spoons have a 30% lower carbon footprint compared to plastic alternatives. Whilst their products are based primarily on seaweed, they acknowledge that any material needs to be sustainably and responsibly harvested and are working towards a sustainable supply chain along with global or regional associations.

Too Good To Go
Founded in 2015, Too Good To Go aims to eliminate avoidable food waste from ending up in landfill. The avoidable food waste includes leftover pastries, vegetables, fruits, refrigerated products, manufactured food, and ready-made food. This food comes from gas stations, supermarkets, bakeries, restaurants, hotels, cafés, and manufacturers or distributers with soon-to-expire products like chocolate bars, canned food, etc. Their app matches local vendors and consumers who can purchase bulk items or surprise bags for a discounted bag to save food that should not end up in landfill. Expanding fast globally and as a recognised B-Corp, Too Good To Go saved over 135 million meals from going to waste (Too Good To Go Impact Report 2024) in-turn avoiding possibly 365,719 tonnes of CO2e. As a social impact company, Too Good To Go saves food from becoming waste as an environmental and moral imperative. While parts of the World struggle with food scarcity and starvation, overconsumption consumes the other. Avoiding food waste is an ethical choice.
Other Initiatives of Too Good To Go:
- The company enables local vendors to donate excess food to local charities.
- They educate people through initiatives like 'Look-Smell-Taste' so consumers and vendors can assess if a product is still viable to consume past the suggested expiry date.
